Whitewater to celebrate International Children’s Day

An International Children’s Day event is planned for Saturday, April 27, according to information released by its sponsors: the Whitewater Unified School District, and two community-oriented organizations, including Whitewater Unites Lives and the Whitewater Kiwanis Breakfast Club.

According to the release, family-friendly activities will be held at Lincoln Elementary School, 242 S. Prince St., Whitewater, between noon and 4 p.m.

The day is meant to showcase “all of the wonderful ways in which all children add to the beauty of our community,” the release stated, further noting that this is the third year during which the day has been celebrated in Whitewater.

The day will include live music, games, crafts, and face-painting, among other activities, according to the release.

Live entertainment will include a performance given by Marco Wence, along with a student choir which will perform songs of Puerto Rican origin and “Chinese children’s songs, including one that honors the Lunar New Year,” the release stated.

Students from Lakeview Elementary School will play drums, the release noted.

A variety of international food, as presented by local organizations, will be offered for sale, the release continued.

“Whitewater prides itself on being a community that is supportive of all children and their families. April 27 is an opportunity to celebrate International Children’s Day and those who care for, support, and encourage children here and around the world,” Miguel Aranda, a member of the event’s planning committee, was quoted as saying in the release.

Representatives from the Mexican Consulate of Milwaukee also will be in attendance to provide information and answer questions, the release continued.

About International Children’s Day

According to the release, the World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland, proclaimed June 1 as International Children’s Day in 1925. The day typically provides speeches about children’s rights and wellbeing, and other events involving or dedicated to children. A similar event, Universal Children’s Day, falls on Nov. 20. It was established by the United Nations in 1954 and aims to promote the welfare of children around the world. The first celebration of International Children’s Day in Whitewater was held in April of 2022. Many countries around the world celebrate the day in late April.

Children help unfold a parachute in advance of a game led by Leah Jurgens as her husband, “Nazario Chickpeazio,” performs his musical rendition of a poem from “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” titled: “How Doth the Little Crocodile.” The family-friendly activity was one of several held last September in Cravath Lakefront Park as part of a storytelling festival held in Whitewater. Children will once again be celebrated with family friendly activities as several Whitewater-based organizations prepare to host an International Children’s Day event this month.
