Breaking: Mount Horeb Area School District officials say have permission to ‘reunify’

The Walworth County Scanner at approximately 11:50 a.m. reported a “shooting” incident at Mount Horeb Middle School in Dane County.

According to the scanner report, one suspect was “down,” with “med flight requested.”

Additionally, the scanner reported, “bomb dogs requested to car crashed before shooting started for two back packs. Per State Patrol no injuries inside school.”

The scanner’s post linked to a communication released by the school district, which stated: “Community members, there has been an active shooter at our middle school this morning. The individual did not breach entryway. Police department is helping to scope out our building to ensure the safety of our students and staff. I will keep you posted.

“Please do not come to the middle school. We are in the process of activating our reunification plan and further details will be provided.”  

Just before 1 p.m., the district released a second communication on its website, which read: “Community members, the local police in charge have given permission to reunify our intermediate center students with their families.

“Intermediate center students who were taken to their alternative safe site, the Mount Horeb Public Library, will be transported to our reunification center at the bus garage.

“At this time, our middle school students and staff remain safe. More information about their unification will occur later.

“Dismissal for all buildings will remain on hold until such time as the police department gives us approval. Thank you for your continued support and understanding.”

Additional communications sent out by the school district noted the following: “An initial search of the middle school has not yielded additional suspects. As importantly, we have no reports of individuals being harmed, with the exception of the alleged assailant.

“Intermediate center students evacuated. There was no threat at that location. Buses are aware and preparing to escort them to our reunification site. we will be updating you with details shortly. 

“We are in the process right now of a systematic release of middle school students to use restrooms interior to the middle school. They are not being released at this time. 

You would be so proud of our students and staff, and we’re so grateful for our first responders. We will keep you updated.”
