Weidl: ‘It’s essential that we model the behaviors we wish to see’

Letter to the editor:

I wanted to address a significant development from last night’s common council meeting. As many of you may be aware, the council took actions which circumvented both the budget amendment process and the request for proposal process, deviating from our good governance manual and our procurement policy.

While we cannot always control the actions of others, it is paramount that we remain steadfast in our commitment to transparency, integrity, and the correct procedures. It’s essential that we model the behaviors we wish to see, not only within our team but also in the broader organization. Our responsibility is to maintain the high standards we’ve set for ourselves, even when faced with external challenges or contrary examples.

As such, directive from the manager’s office requires that all staff projects and recommendations will continue to strictly adhere to our proscribed procedures. It is by upholding these standards that we set an example for others to follow. I believe in our collective strength and integrity, and I trust that we will continue to embody the principles of good governance in all we do.

Remember, leadership isn’t just about the position one holds but also the actions one takes. We have an obligation to model the way and demonstrate the behaviors we expect in others.
