Vote ‘no’ to amendment questions on Aug. 13

Letter to the editor:

I plan to vote ‘no’ on the two amendment questions on the ballot and I urge you to do so too. The wording is confusing and meant to remove the checks and balances built into our Wisconsin constitution. The amendment questions would give the Legislature sole power on the use of critical federal funds without any input from the governor who is elected by a fair statewide election.  The amendments would jeopardize funding for first responders when disasters strike, as well as funding for  other important public needs. The Wisconsin Legislature has been extremely slow to act on critical pubic health problems.  It long blocked funding to deal with PFAS, the forever chemicals that have polluted our waters. It refused money that would provide health care to 90,000 Wisconsinites. And it cost Wisconsinites $36 million dollars that could combat the opioid epidemic.  Many organizations oppose these amendments including The League of Conservation Voters, the League of Women Voters, Common Cause and the Wisconsin Public Health Association.  Please vote ‘no’ to stop giving the Legislature complete control of federal funds.
