UW-Whitewater’s Fairhaven Lecture Series fall topics announced

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater has announced topics to be presented as part of its fall continuing education series which is held at Fairhaven Senior Services in Whitewater.

According to information released through the university’s Office of Continuing Education, the series, offered at Fairhaven, 435 W. Starin Rd., is in its 40th year.

In celebration of the milestone, the fall segment of the series is titled: “A Legacy of Lifelong Learning: Celebrating 40 years of Community Conversations.”

“Since 1983, UW-Whitewater faculty and staff, and community and business leaders, have offered free presentations on topics ranging from art and literature to history and politics,” the release stated, further describing the series as “one of Whitewater’s best kept secrets.”

Lectures within the series are free and open to the public, the release stated.

Lectures are held on Mondays throughout the months of September, October and November, at 3 p.m., in the Fairhaven Senior Services Fellowship Hall.

According to the release, some lectures may be live-streamed on Facebook. Lectures also may be recorded and posted on YouTube.

• “Learning for the Ages,” presented by Jon Werner, professor, management, Sept. 18.

• “Food and Memory: Grinding Stones, a Year of Cooking, and Other Ways to Stay in Touch with Las Abuelas,” presented by Pilar Melero, professor, World Languages and Cultures, Sept. 25.

• “Barley, Barberry, and Biological Warfare: A Short History of Stem Rust, 4,000 BCE to Present,” presented by Karl Brown, associate professor, history, Oct. 2.

• “The Significance of Reefs in Earth’s Ancient History,” presented by Rex Hanger, professor, geology, geography and environmental science,  Oct. 9.

• “Celebrating 40 Years of the Fairhaven Lecture Series,” a reflection with refreshments, with entertainment presented by Benjamin Whitcomb, professor of cello, Oct. 16.  Reservations required by contacting Borne,  by email: bornek@uww.edu or phone: 262-472-1003.

 • “The Road to Nationals: Performances of the UW-Whitewater Forensics Team,” offered through the presentation of three performances of the UW-Whitewater Forensics Team, Nov. 6.

• “Institutional Integrity and Legitimacy: Today’s Supreme Court,” presented by Jolly Emrey, associate professor and department chairperson, politics, government and law, Nov. 13.
