The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at Rock County, 2909, Kellogg Ave., Janesville, has announced that it will be hosting a variety of activities throughout October.

They include a tour and open house, including several solar power installations and a pollinator prairie habitat installed amidst solar photovoltaic (PV) pole mounts; a performance by the URock Concert Band, titled: “Collage XII”; a presentation titled: “Neurodiversity and How to Be a Better Ally to the Disabled Community,” and a presentation titled: “Busting LGBTQ+ Myths.”

Solar power and pollinator prairie

According to information released by event organizers at the UW-Whitewater at Rock County, the American Solar Energy Society, which, according to its website, is “dedicated to helping America toward the goal of 100% renewably energy,” will be sponsoring a tour and open house, with information made available at the Rock County campus Friday, Oct. 6, from 3 to 6 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 7, between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

According to the release, participants will “see/touch three different solar PV array configurations, inverters, power to grid and lab,” “walk the new pollinator prairie habitat restoration amidst solar PV pole mounts,” and be given access to “useful green energy information for homeowners, teachers and businesses.”

The event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required.

URock Concert Band presents ‘Collage XII’

According to the release, the URock Concert Band, along with guest vocalist Kevin Vechinsky, the URock Chamber Orchestra, and a Cabaret featuring Anna Schuette-Reid, will comprise a performance titled: “Collage XII.” The concert will be held Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m., at the Kirk Denmark Theater, which is located on the UW-W Rock County campus.

The event is free and open to the public.

‘Busting LGBTQ+ Myths’

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at Rock County, according to the release, will be hosting speaker Graham Olen, who will present: “Busting LGBTQ+ Myths.”

According to the release, “Olen, a disabled queer trans man (he/they) attending Beloit College, will explore both the negative and positive assumptions made about the queer community, while identifying some queer mythology from around the world to give a lighter spin to the ‘myths’ theme.”

The release notes that “Olen started this conversation at the LGBTQ+ Educational Summit at Blackhawk Technical College this summer, and is thrilled to have this chance to carry on the conversation.”

The presentation will be made Thursday, Oct. 12, at 6:30 p.m., in the Kirk Denmark Theater, UW-W Rock County Campus.

‘Neurodiversity and How to Be a Better Ally to the Disabled Community’

As stated in the release, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at Rock County will be hosting speaker Jesse Alonzo, who will make a presentation titled: “Neurodiversity and How to Be a Better Ally to the Disabled Community.”

According to the release, “Alonzo will take a sociological perspective, breaking down various myths and harmful beliefs from the medical community.”

Alonzo, a University of Wisconsin-Whitewater student, who has been diagnosed as having autism and ADHD, will discuss “disability from actual lived experiences. This presentation will teach the community how to better support neurodivergent individuals, while educating on disability rights and activism,” the release noted.

The presentation will be held Thursday, Oct. 19, at 6:30 p.m., at the Kirk Denmark Theater.
