Sidewalk sand deliveries to residents planned for Dec. 4

The Whitewater Department of Public Works has announced that it will deliver sand for placement on public sidewalks on Monday, Dec. 4.

Residents who are interested in receiving a sand delivery are asked to place a “sturdy container” at the curb by 7 a.m. on the morning of delivery.

According to information released by city officials, a cardboard box is not considered to be a sturdy container.

In the case of a snowstorm or other “unpredictable occurrence that prevents delivery” on the specified day, sand will be delivered “as soon as weather permits,” the release stated.

The release states that owners, occupants and “person(s) in charge” of any building or lot that has sidewalk frontage or adjoining sidewalk is responsible for removing all snow and ice from the sidewalk within 24 hours after the snow or ice event.

Ice that has formed on any sidewalk that “cannot be removed,” the release noted, must be sprinkled by the responsible party with salt or sand.

Those with questions about sand delivery or ice and snow removal from sidewalks are encouraged to call the city’s Street Department: 262-473-0560.
