PSAs: Compost site hours changing; Healthy Lakes Summit offered

The Whitewater compost site, 599 N. Jefferson St., will undergo a change in its hours of operation beginning Wednesday, Sept. 11, according to information released by city officials.

The compost site is open on Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. On Sept. 11, the hours will change, with the site open from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Changes do not affect the site’s Saturday hours of operation, which are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The site will remain open until Wednesday, Nov. 20, after which it will close for the season.

Residents with questions are encouraged to contact Whitewater Streets/Parks/Stormwater Utility Superintendent Brian Neumeister by phone: 262-473-0560 or email: bneumeister@whitewater-wi.gov.

Lakes summit

In addition, city officials have announced that a “Together for Healthy Lakes Summit” will be held Wednesday, Oct. 2, between 5 and 7 p.m. at area restaurant 841 Brewhouse, 841 E. Milwaukee St., Whitewater.

The event is free and open to the public.

Information released by officials states that the event will offer an opportunity to learn and ask questions about lake management, conservation and recreation.

The event will focus on exploring such concepts as they relate to Trippe and Cravath lakes.

Within the release, Whitewater Assistant Parks, Recreation, and Community Events Director Michelle Dujardin noted that attendees will have an opportunity to “hear from leading experts in environmental science, lake management, and sustainable practices,” as well as “gain knowledge” about the “latest trends and solutions.”

Additionally, she wrote, attendees will find “like-minded individuals, industry leaders, and organizations dedicated to preserving and enhancing” the city’s lakes and waterways.

During the summit, attendees will explore new technologies and strategies, which, she wrote, are “designed to address challenges facing our lakes and their ecosystems.”

A view, in May of 2023, of Cravath Lake from the shoreline in Cravath Lakefront Park shows water levels rising, following a drained and overgrown lakebed left exposed in 2021. In 2023, city officials said cattail abatement was the next step associated with a multiyear lake restoration process.

Following draining and dredging as part of a weed abatement process, Cravath Lake is characterized by a thick bed of vegetation in the fall of 2021. The lake, along with Trippe Lake, two basins within a connected waterway both in the city of Whitewater, has since been refilled with water and continues to undergone a series of techniques aimed at increased ecosystem health.

Water greets the shoreline of Cravath Lake in the spring of 2015. Planning for a multiyear lake restoration project — aimed at weed abatement and increased water flow within the connected Cravath and Trippe lakes impoundment — began in 2017, with restoration work beginning in 2019.

  • Great reporting as always… I thought the lakes issues were put to rest? I gave up on opinions and ideas. It is hard to stay positive with contrarian folks. Bless your reporting…
