Police identify Illinois resident as victim in Friday’s shooting

In an updated news release, Whitewater Police Chief Dan Meyer stated that Kara Welsh, of Plainfield, Ill., has been identified as the victim who died Friday after sustaining several gunshot wounds.

According to the release, the victim died in an apartment at 147 W. Whitewater St., Whitewater.

Information released earlier by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater identified Welsh, 21, as a student there.

In his release, Meyer said Welsh’s name was withheld in an earlier release until her family could be notified.

Additionally, the updated release reported that a 23-year-old male suspect, whose name is still being withheld, has been arrested and confined in the Walworth County Jail.

The Whitewater Police Department has forwarded the following charges to the Walworth County District Attorney’s Office: First Degree Intentional Homicide, Endangering Safety by the Use of a Dangerous Weapon, and Disorderly Conduct While Armed.

The release stated: “Due to the fact that this is an ongoing investigation, no additional details will be provided at this time.”

Police continue to ask members of the public with information about the crime to contact them by phone: 262-473-0555, option 4, or leave an anonymous tip using P3Tips.com.
