National Weather Service update: Tornados Sunday over Lake Koshkonong and east of Janesville confirmed

The National Weather Service (NWS) as of Monday evening has updated its storm map to include tornados on Sunday over Lake Koshkonong and east of Janesville.

Earlier on Monday, the map confirmed two weather events in Jefferson County Sunday, including one reported as a “probable tornado” at 5:36 p.m. in rural Jefferson County near County Road K, and a second reported Sunday at 5:35 p.m., described as “on the ground northwest of Whitewater” near U.S. Highway 12. 

As of Monday evening, the map has been updated to include a third tornado reported In Jefferson County near Fort Atkinson on Sunday at 5:27 p.m.

According to a notation on the map, “a NWS storm survey found that an EF-0 rated tornado with an estimated wind speed of 65 (miles per hour) developed over northeastern Lake Koshkonong, and tracked 2.5 (miles) northeast toward the southwestern side of Fort Atkinson. Damage was mainly confined to downed tree limbs.”

The map, as of Monday evening, additionally indicates that a tornado was confirmed Sunday at 5:15 p.m. located east-northeast of Janesville. The notation on the map further states that “a NWS storm survey found that an EF-0 rated tornado, with an estimated peak wind speed of 80 (miles per hour) developed east of Janesville and tracked to the north-northeast into Jefferson County, ending in the vicinity of U.S. Highway 12, between Fort Atkinson and Whitewater. The tornado damage track was approximately 13.8 miles long.”

Also in Rock County, near Footville, a tornado was reported Sunday at 5 p.m.

According to notations on the map, a “NWS survey confirms an EF-0 tornado with peak wind speeds of 80 (miles per hour) touching down.” The notation further indicates that the touchdown time is estimated via radar data.

A Monday evening update of the map shows five tornados have been confirmed in the WhitewaterWise and Fort Atkinson Online readership area: three in Jefferson County and two in Rock County. Earlier on Monday, the National Weather Service map, pictured below, showed confirmation of two tornados in Jefferson County and several reports of wind damage in Rock County.
