Fort Atkinson is site of area Veterans Benefits Block Party

The Jefferson County Veterans Service Office has announced that it will be hosting its Veterans Benefits Block Party this Saturday in Fort Atkinson.

The event will be held at the Fort Atkinson Club and the American Legion Post 166, 201-211 S. Water St. East, in downtown Fort Atkinson between noon and 5 p.m.

A social event will follow between 5 and 8 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. Attendees and veterans do not need to live in Jefferson County to participate in the event.

According to information released by the veteran’s service, the activity serves as a “one-stop shop” for veterans and their families as they connect with federal, state and local organizations, which, the release notes, “can make a significant positive impact in their lives.”

As stated in the release: “Attendees can expect an array of resources and services tailored to meet the specific needs of veterans. Representatives will be on hand to offer guidance and assistance on topics such as VA disability claims, healthcare, education benefits, employment, financial resources, longterm care, VA home loans and homebuyer assistance grants.”

Additionally, the release noted, “Every attendee can also learn about the Jefferson County Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC), which offers the general public a single-entry point for information and assistance on issues affecting older people and people with disabilities, regardless of income.”

During the event, the Midwest BBQ Outreach (MBO), a “veteran-powered nonprofit,” the release read, will provide  complimentary meals, beginning at noon and continuing while supplies last. A suggested donation of $10 will support MBO’s mission of feeding veterans and other community groups, the release stated.

The American Legion Post 166 Auxiliary will provide refreshments from 5 to 8 p.m. during the social, which will feature music performed by Jim Neist & The Kettle Moraine Blues. The performance will be held  from between 4 and 6 p.m.

“Hosting an event like this is a great way for us to connect with our fellow Veterans who may not know they can get help locally with VA related and other services It gives us an opportunity to answer questions that many people might not know to ask about,” Yvonne Duesterhoeft, Jefferson County Veterans Service officer, was quoted as saying in the release.
