Fall water main, hydrant flushing to begin Monday; compost site hours changed

Whitewater city officials have announced that the semi-annual water main and hydrant flushing program will begin on Monday.

The activity is anticipated to continue through Wednesday, Sept. 27.

According to information released by Water Utility Superintendent Jim Bergner, flushing of water mains is necessary to test the hydrants to make sure adequate flow and pressure is available.

Additionally, he wrote, It confirms that the fire hydrants and valves are operating correctly.

Further, the release noted, it enhances water quality by removing sediment from the pipes in order to maintain water clarity and quality in the distribution pipes.

As noted in the release, “flushing of water mains and hydrants will cause some discoloration of water. If you experience this after hydrant flushing, turn on an outside spigot or a cold water tap in the lowest level of your home until the water clears.”

The release advises residents to use caution when washing white or light-colored clothing.

“Discoloration of water due to flushing will stain white clothing,” the release stated, further advising residents to avoid washing closes until the water runs clear.

Should water utility crews determine a need for more than the allotted time for flushing, the activity will continue past the Sept. 27 timeframe and into the following week.

Those with questions are encouraged to contact Bergner by email: jbergner@whitewater-wi.gov or phone: 262-473-0560.
