Council seeks applicants for vacancies

By Kim McDarison

The Whitewater Common Council is seeking applicants to fill two of its vacancies, according to information released by city officials Wednesday.

The two vacancies include an at-large seat held by the late Jim Allen and a District 1 seat recently vacated through resignation by former councilman David Stone.

Those interested in being considered for an appointment to either of the seats are encouraged by city officials to obtain an application at the Whitewater Municipal Building, 312 W. Whitewater St., or by visiting the city’s website using the following links:

• Those interested in consideration for Aldermanic District 1 may access an application through this link: https://www.whitewater-wi.gov/FormCenter/Clerks-Office-12/Application-for-Appointment-to-Common-Co-119

• Those interested in consideration for the at-large seat may access an application through this link: https://www.whitewater-wi.gov/FormCenter/Clerks-Office-12/Application-for-Appointment-to-Common-Co-120.

An application deadline for consideration by council for appointment to either seat is Jan. 30, at 4:30 p.m.

Interviews of interested applicants are anticipated to be held during the council’s Tuesday, Feb. 6 meeting, during which time it is anticipated that council members will make appointments and the newly selected council members will be installed.

During their Tuesday meeting, council members noted that the new council members, once appointed, would likely be asked to make selections for the committees upon which each would like to serve during the council’s meeting on Feb. 20.

Applicants appointed in February will fill the two seats until such time when, within the planned election cycle, the seats come due for reelection.

The at-large seat will come due for reelection during the spring general election on April 2.

In April, two candidates have announced their candidacy and have submitted the applicable paperwork to have their names placed on the printed ballot.

They are Greg Majkrzak and Keith Staebler.

Coming to the podium Tuesday during the council’s most recent meeting, Staebler announced that he would file an application for consideration to fill the seat by appointment in advance of the April 2 election.

A term for the District 1 seat expires in April of 2025, at which time an election will be held to allow candidates to come forward to fill the seat.

Former councilman David Stone was elected last April. He submitted a letter of resignation in December. An applicant appointed in February would serve for the remaining 15 months of the seat’s two-year term.

Those with questions about the application process are encouraged to contact the city clerk’s office by phone: 262-473-0102 or email: hboehm@whitewater-wi.org.

Additionally, seats held by Jill Gerber and Lukas Schreiber will be found on the April ballot.

Neither incumbent is running for reelection to their seat.

Brian Schanen is the lone candidate running for the open Aldermanic District 4 seat held by Gerber.

Orin Smith is the lone candidate running for the open Aldermanic District 2 seat held by Schreiber.

While Schanen and Smith are running unopposed, write-in candidates remain possible.
