Commentary: Scott Johnson urges UW-Madison chancellor to ‘crack down’ on campus violence

Rep. Scott Johnson Wednesday issued a statement in response to the violence on college campuses across the country, including University of Wisconsin-Madison.

“Seeing the footage from Columbia University, USC Berkeley, and then even our own university system flagship has saddened me. The rhetoric coming from these ‘protests’ is very concerning. This is not what we should be hearing from places of higher learning. Gov. (Tony) Evers says he is ‘monitoring’ the situation. I certainly hope the governor will act when necessary so we don’t have another Kenosha,” Johnson noted in his statement sent to the media.

He continued: “I implore my colleagues in both the Assembly and Senate to pressure the chancellor and her administration to immediately find out which faculty members are pushing our students to believe in anti-American dogma. The First Amendment is our country’s most powerful asset, but we cannot allow violence and we certainly cannot allow radicalism to burrow and infect our children.

“To every parent and student I so proudly represent, I will keep up the fight here in the capitol, but would encourage constituents to contact their representative and ask them: do they side with terrorist sympathizers or do they want safe places of higher learning?

“Wisconsinites deserve to know how their representatives align.”
