Walworth County officials have announced they will be hosting a two-day residential Clean Sweep recycling event in October.

The event will be held Friday, Oct. 4, and Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Walworth County Public Works building, W4097 County Road NN, Elkhorn.

According to information released by county officials, the Clean Sweep program safely collects and disposes of waste through a licensed facility.

During the Friday event, held between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m., residents may dispose of household hazardous waste.

As stated in the release, acceptable hazardous waste products are those labeled caustic, acid, flammable, danger, warning or poison. Examples include oil- and lead-based paints, pesticides and herbicides, adhesives and lubricants, old fuel, fluorescent bulbs, mercury thermometers, thermostats, furniture strippers, drain cleaners, antifreeze, brake fluid, and motor oil.

During the Saturday event, held between 8 a.m. and noon, residents may dispose of household hazardous waste and electronics, TVs, and appliances.

Disposal of household hazardous waste is free, as is the disposal of all electronics and computers.

Items that can be brought to the site for disposal for a cash-only fee include:

• All TVs, $10 each.

• Computer monitors, $5 each.

• Mini fridges, small AC units, and dehumidifiers, $5 each.

• Refrigerators and freezers, $10 each.

All other appliances may be disposed of for free, the release continued.

According to the release, the Clean Sweep program has served the residents of Walworth County since 1992. The annual program has successfully kept hazardous waste out of landfills, wastewater treatment facilities, the environment, and groundwater.

Clean Sweep is sponsored by the Walworth County Public Works Department and partially funded by the town of Darien, Mallard Ridge Landfill Fund, donations, and a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, the release stated.

Other contributions to the Clean Sweep program include: the cities of Delavan and Whitewater, and organizations such as Halverson Door, Lake Lorraine Restoration & Protection Association, town of Linn, village of East Troy, village of Williams Bay, Walworth County Metropolitan Sewerage District, and Westenn Heating & Air Conditioning.
