‘Sometimes, politics intrudes into the life of a community when they should not’

Letter to the editor:

I remember when two of my grandchildren, ages 12 and 9, came to visit and we attended the Whitewater Farmers Market. The kids loved browsing the craft booths and of course buying some delicious pastry. We had stopped at the Sweet Spot Café’ for a coffee earlier in the day and walked around the downtown area. There are many interesting restaurants and businesses in the area, even some owned and operated by immigrant families. I never once felt unsafe in this area of Whitewater nor any other I’ve been to.

The people I have met, know, and have associations with in Whitewater have all been good people. I shop here, patronize the restaurants, and have my cars fixed here. That might be at Culvers, a Mexican restaurant, or an independent auto repair shop.

Sometimes, politics intrudes into the life of a community when they should not. Whitewater is not crime-ridden, or overrun with immigrants. What’s needed is rational leadership, intelligent decision making, and empathy for our new neighbors.

  • It’s ironic you should mention children and illegal immigration in the same sentence when speaking about Whitewater. The influx of poor children who don’t speak English has absolutely decimated academic achievement in Whitewater to the point where its test scores have dropped us from above average to the bottom quintile in all of four years and falling. But of course, it’s not your kids that go to school here, so you can write letters to the editor advertising your open-mindedness, making yourself look good while us rubes (and our children) take one for the team. Spare us.
