A town of Lafayette resident is dead after his home exploded and caught fire, according to information released Wednesday by the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office and the Walworth County Medical Examiner’s Office.

According to the release, 68-year-old Leland R. Holden was located Tuesday in the rubble of his home after it exploded. He was transported to a local trauma center by Flight For Life, but, the release stated, “he later died.”

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the residence on Kulow Road Tuesday at approximately 2:18 p.m. after the Walworth County Communications Center received numerous calls of a structure fire and reports of an explosion at a residence.

Deputies and members of the Elkhorn Fire Department were dispatched, according to the release.

Upon their arrival, deputies reported “a small fire and confirmed an explosion had occurred at the residence,” the release continued.

“Deputies immediately began to search for survivors and secured the area until the arrival of fire and rescue personnel,” the release read.
