The Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the office of Gov. Tony Evers have announced that a resurfacing project will begin along segments of 1-43 Rock Freeway next month.

According to information released by the state agencies, the governor has approved a $2.99 million project on segments of the roadway between U.S. Highway 12 in the city of Elkhorn and State Highway 83 in the city of Mukwonago. Roadway to be placed under construction resides in Walworth and Waukesha counties.

Payne and Dolan is the prime contractor for the project.

Construction is slated to begin Monday, May 6.

Improvements include removing 2.5 inches of existing asphalt along segments of I-43 and replacing it with new asphalt pavement. Additionally, the project includes updated signs and pavement markings.

While construction is underway, the release noted, traffic will be maintained on I-43 in both directions.

The project calls for work to be completed in two states: the first will include the closure of inside lanes in both directions on the interstate. The second will see closures of outside lanes. While work is being performed, access to local businesses and residences will be maintained, according to the release.

Work schedules are weather dependent, with work set to complete in late summer of this year.
