The Greater Whitewater Committee, the organizer of the Discover Whitewater Series two-day event, featuring a half marathon and 5K run, has announced that some 475 runners participated in this year’s event, which was held Saturday and Sunday.
The event is in its eleventh year.
The event attracted some 200 volunteers and approximately 70 sponsors, event organizers said in a recent news release.
Runners this year arrived from 40 states including Wisconsin.
Proceeds from the annual event are used to support area charities.
Among actives was an address given Sunday by University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Chancellor Corey King, and kid-friendly events which were held on Saturday.
The half marathon and 5K races were held on Sunday.
Winners of the races are as follow:
• Women’s Half Marathon Winners: Jenny Zwagerman, Megan Wagner, Kortney Pippenger
• Men’s Half Marathon Winners: David Fassbender, Braeden Michael, Carl Greene
• Half Marathon Teams Winner: Jenny Zwagerman, Tyler Zwagerman, Alex Moehn, Christina Moehn
• Women’s 5k Winners: Alyse Peters, Heidi Mane, Kate Omernik
• Men’s 5k Winners: Mark Elworthy, Quinn Mckenzie, Lucas Springstroh

According to the release, “as runners ventured through the course, they got to experience some of Whitewater’s finest features. The DWS (Discover Whitewater Series) team was proud to welcome new and returning participants alike.”
All proceeds will be distributed to the DWS’ four charity partners, including: Whitewater LEADS, Working for Whitewater’s Wellness (W3), Bethel House of Whitewater, and the J-Hawk’s Aquatic club.
After the events, runners and volunteers joined together in celebration the day’s accomplishments at 841 Brewhouse, Whitewater, the release stated.
“The 11th Annual DWS was an amazing community event. It was great to see runners and volunteers showcase their hard work,” Race Director Dawson Miller was quoted as saying in the release.
