The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at Rock County has announced that it will be offering a presentation titled: “The Decision to Drop the Bomb.”

According to information released by the university, the presentation will be given by David McKay, professor of history, Thursday, Sept. 28, at 6:30 p.m., in the Kirk Denmark Theater, UW-Whitewater Rock County campus, 2909 Kellogg Ave., Janesville.

The presentation is free and open to the public.

As stated in the release: “this summer the world learned about J. Robert Oppenheimer and his pursuit to build the atomic bomb in the movie ‘Oppenheimer.’ When confronted with the horrors of the atomic bomb, it is natural to ask how anyone could have done this to people. McKay has been one of the instructors of “The History, Physics, and Ethics of the Atomic Bomb,” a course offered at UW-W at Rock County since 1998. In this presentation, McKay will address this question and walk through Harry S. Truman’s decision-making process, starting with the basic issue of whether to use the bomb at all and explore how and where to use it. You may or may not agree with Truman, but you will understand why he made the decision he did.”
